Electronic Mail at ISU
All ISU students, faculty, and staff are eligible for a network
account that will allow access to electronic mail services at ISU.
Faculty, Staff and Retired/Emeriti are also eligible for a GroupWise account.
You can request this account through the
Help
Desk.
Using Email at ISU:
Faculty, Staff and Retired/Emeriti
GroupWise is a package that faculty and staff are beginning to
learn and use which includes an email component. To access
your GroupWise email on campus, find and click on your GroupWise icon
(Usually available at Start -> Programs -> GroupWise), have your
GroupWise username and password handy. GroupWise allows fast and easy access from anywhere
over web! To access GroupWise from off campus, have your GroupWise username and
password handy and then point your web browser to:
http://gwmail.indstate.edu.
Students
ISU Students access their email through the
MyISU Portal. Students login to
the MyISU Portal using their
Sycamore login and password and then click on the mail button at the top
right of the page. Information on how to get your
Sycamore login and password is available here:
MyISU Portal Password Information.
Email Addresses
An Internet e-mail address consists of the user's network name, followed
by the symbol @, followed by the name of the server, followed by the institution's
name, and ending with the Internet domain. The following is an example
of an ISU student's Internet e-mail address as it would appear to someone
at a distant location :
jdoe@mymail.indstate.edu
-
Taking the address backwards, the .edu means that this is an educational
facility. Businesses and other commercial users end with .com, and
government agencies end with .gov. Many foreign sites end with an
abbreviation for the host country.
-
The second part is .indstate. This is the specific address of Indiana
State University. All addresses on campus will end with .indstate.edu.
-
The third part is mymail. This is the name of a specific server
on campus. A server is simply a computer that has been set up to receive
and send files. There are many servers on campus, such as
ruby, stem, amber, befac, etc. The @ symbol separates the account name from
the address. Therefore, jdoe@mymail.indstate.edu would be one of
many accounts on the "mymail" server.
Locating an Email Address
Unfortunately, there is no "universal" address book for email addresses,
but many universities have an online directory. At ISU, you can locate
someone's email address using the
ISU Online Directory.

and Don'ts of E-mail for a list of guidelines to use when sending email.
