Downloading and configuring WTS remote software

Table of Contents

What is WTS?

WTS (Windows Terminal Software) is used to access the NT terminal server on the ISU campus from remote locations. Using WTS, students at remote sites can run any program on their own computer by connecting to the terminal server. Citrix Metaframe client software, a type of WTS, is our recommendation for downloading and connecting to ISU servers.

Establishing a Terminal Server Account

Before you can access the ISU windows terminal server from home, you will need to have the following:

  1. A dial-in connection through your local Internet Service Provider or ISU PPP
  2. An account with username and password to access the terminal server. If you do not have an account with username and password, contact your instructor.

If you have any problems with this document or connecting from home, please use one of our OIT Help Desk web forms to report your problem, or call the Help Desk at (812) 237-2910 or (888) 818-5465 Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 8:00 pm for phone support.

Hardware and Space Requirements

The Citrix software can only be run on a system with Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP. Exact hardware and memory requirements are as follows:

Hardware

  • 32-bit x86-based microprocessor (Intel® Pentium™ or higher), VGA or higher resolution video display adapter
  • One or more hard disks, with 300 MB minimum free hard disk space on the partition that will contain the WINFRAME system files
  • A high-density floppy disk drive
  • One or more network adapter cards

Memory

  • 16 MB RAM minimum

Optional components

  • Mouse or other pointing device
  • One or more SCSI CD-ROM drives

Downloading Software

The Citrix WTS Client Access Software is available to download from the web. It can be found at http://download.citrix.com.  You will need to know which platform your computer is using (Windows 95, 98 or NT).

To download Citrix:

  1. Go to http://download.citrix.com/
  2. Click on Clients
  3. Under Citrix Presentation Server , Windows 9x/NT/2000/2003/XP: 32-bit, 64-bit , click on the Citrix Presentation Server Client Packager - Version 9.150
  4. Choose and click on the English Get Software link.
  5. You will get a popup window that will ask you if you would like to open the file or save the file. Choose Open or Run.
  6. The file will download, when finished the setup process will begin.
  7. Accept the License Agreement and click next
  8. Click next on "Enter server URL"
  9. Choose No to use your local username and password.
  10. Uncheck "Enable Quick Launch Bar"
  11. Click Next on any other menus. Setup will then begin copying files.
  12. Once finished, click Finish.

Setting up a New ICA Connection

  1. Double click on the "Citrix Program Neighborhood" icon to open it (either on the desktop or in the programs menu).   Double click on the icon called Add ICA Connection.
  2. In the first window, you are asked for the type of network connection you have.  Accept the default type (Local Area Network) and click on the Next button.
  3. In this window, you are asked to fill in the description of the new remote application and the server. The name of the ISU terminal server is “Blade3.” Fill in “Blade3” as the description and “blade3.indstate.edu” as the server, then click Next.
  4. Click next on the desired encryption level menu.

  5. Leave the window asking you for your username, password, and domain blank. You will be prompted for this information when you connect to the server. Click Next.
  6. The next window asks you whether you want to change the properties of the window. You may change the properties of your window at this time by clicking on the Change button. It is recommended that you change your window size to full screen. You can do this by deselecting (clicking) the top “Use Default” checkbox and selecting “Full Screen.” Click Next.
  7. In the next window, leave both the Application box and the Working Directory box blank.  Click the Next button to get to the final window.
  8.  Click on Finish.

Connecting to the Terminal Server

After you are finished setting up the Citrix software, the following window will appear:

Double click the blade3 icon to start the connection.

You will get a large screen with a Novell username and password box. Please be sure to Uncheck Workstation Only.

Type your Sycamore Login and Password (the MyISU portal information) on the line and click Ok.

When you see the Windows Workstation login box, type your Blade3 username and password on the line, then click the OK button. The username typically matches your Sycamore Login but the password will be different. See the Establishing a Terminal Server Account for information on how to get an account on this server.

Because you are connected to the server profile once you are connected, you will notice that your icons and the programs are different.
To Access SPSS or other Statistical Software packages, click the Start Button, then All Programs. You will find a Statistical Software folder listed. Beneath that are SAS, Minitab and SPSS for Windows.

NOTE:  In the future, you can double-click on the Remote Application Manager icon on your desktop to get to the blade3 icon shown above.

Saving Files

Although each user is allotted space on the N: drive on the terminal server, it is recommended that you save most files on your ISU Network Home Directory H:\.

Printing

If your local printer does not show up on the list of printers, contact the OIT Help Desk to request that your printer be installed on the NT server. You will need to supply the make and model of your printer.

Changing Your Password

You will most likely wish to change the initial password assigned to one a bit easier for you to remember. To change your password, you will need to be logged in to the NT terminal server.

  1. Click on Start, then select "Windows NT Security." Note: If you are viewing the terminal server with a partial screen, make sure that you are selecting the Start button on the terminal server as opposed to your own computer's Start button.
  2. Click on the "Change Password" button. Fill in the fields to change your old password to a new password.

It is a good idea to change your password from time to time as it is the primary security for your personal terminal server account.

Logging off WTS

When you are finished with your session, click the Start button and select Logoff. This will return your computer to your normal desktop.

NOTE: If at some point during your session you are disconnected but are not finished with your session, you have 10 minutes to reconnect.
